Three day trips from Marrakech are worth the road: the High Atlas foothills at Imlil or the Ourika Valley, the Atlantic town of Essaouira, and the Ouzoud waterfalls. Each is a genuinely different landscape, and each takes a real chunk of the day in a car. This is what each one is actually like, and how long the road really is.
Ben arranges the driving for all of these, and his first question is always the same: how many days do you have in total? That answer changes which of these makes sense.
The High Atlas: Imlil and the Ourika Valley
These are the two standard mountain days, and they are quite different.
Ourika Valley
Closest of all, roughly an hour southeast of the city depending on traffic and how far up the valley you go. The road follows a river up into the foothills past terraced fields, Berber villages, and cafes with tables set on platforms over the water. The usual endpoint is Setti Fatma, where a rough footpath climbs to a series of small waterfalls.
It is green, it is cool in summer, and it is a popular escape for Marrakech families on Sundays, which is worth knowing if you dislike crowds. The waterfall walk involves scrambling over wet rock, so wear shoes with grip.
Imlil
Further and higher, around an hour and a half from the city, at the end of the road up the Mizane valley. Imlil is the trailhead for Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at about 4,167 meters, and it feels like a mountain village rather than a valley outing: walnut groves, mule tracks, stone houses, and real peaks around you.
For a day trip you are not climbing Toubkal. What you can do is walk up to a nearby village, have lunch on a terrace, and be back in Marrakech for dinner. If you want a proper trek, that needs its own days and a mountain guide.
Snow sits on the High Atlas through the winter and into spring, and the Imlil road can be affected in bad weather.
Essaouira, on the Atlantic
Roughly 175 kilometers west, commonly around two and a half to three hours each way. Essaouira is a fortified port town with a walled medina that is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it is the opposite of Marrakech in almost every way: cool, breezy, low, blue and white, laid out on a rough grid by an eighteenth century European engineer, so it is nearly impossible to get lost in.
What you do there: walk the ramparts of the Skala de la Ville, watch the blue fishing boats unload, eat grilled fish, and wander the medina, which is calmer and far less pressured than the Marrakech souks. There are woodworkers here who do fine thuya inlay work.
The drive passes through argan country, where you will see the cooperatives, and, if you are lucky, goats standing in the argan trees. That last one is real, though be aware that some roadside goat trees are staged for photographs.
The honest note: it is a long day for a town that deserves a night. If you can spare an overnight, do that instead.
Ouzoud waterfalls
Around 150 kilometers northeast, commonly about two and a half to three hours each way. The falls drop in stages down a red gorge, reportedly around 110 meters in total, into pools at the bottom. A path switchbacks down through olive terraces, there are small boats that take you close to the spray, and there is a resident population of Barbary macaques in the trees.
It is the greenest, wettest thing within a day of Marrakech, and it is a real hike down and back up in the heat. Flow is strongest in spring after the winter rain and snowmelt.
Do not feed the monkeys, and keep bags closed.
Choosing between them
A short way to think about it:
- One free day, first visit, want contrast: Ourika Valley or Imlil.
- One free day, want a second town: Essaouira, accepting the driving.
- One free day, traveling with teenagers, want water: Ouzoud.
- Two free days: Atlas one day, Essaouira overnight. That is the combination we suggest most often.
- Three or more free days and the dunes are the point: read desert tours from Marrakech first, because that is a longer commitment.
Practical notes for any of these
Leave early. All three are better with an early start, and the return drive in the dark is slower.
Take cash in small notes for parking, cafes, tips and entry to small sites. Cards are not much use once you leave the city.
Bring layers. The mountains are cooler than Marrakech, sometimes by a lot, and Essaouira is windy even when the city is baking.
Do not try to combine two of these in one day. People ask. The roads do not allow it.
